What you'll do

A morning on a working spice farm outside Kizimbani with Juma, who grew up on it — cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon bark, vanilla, and the lipstick tree the children always want. Then lunch, then the Jozani forest in the afternoon, when the red colobus come down to the low branches.

The day, hour by hour

1. 08:00Pickup from your hotel

   Air-conditioned vehicle from Kiwengwa, Paje, Jambiani or Michamvi.

2. 09:30The spice farm at Kizimbani· 2 hrs

   Walk the rows with Juma. Everything gets crushed, smelled and tasted. Fruit tasting at the end.

3. 12:00Lunch on the farm· 1 hr

   Pilau, coconut bean curry, chapati and fresh fruit. Vegetarian and vegan by default.

4. 13:30Jozani forest and the mangrove boardwalk· 2 hrs

   The colobus troop near the road first, then the quieter mahogany trail and the boardwalk at Pete.

5. 16:30Back at your hotel

   Slightly later from Nungwi and Kendwa.

Where we pick you up

Good to know before you book

• Long trousers and closed shoes make the forest much more comfortable.
• The colobus are wild — we keep three metres back and never feed them.
• The boardwalk is flat and stroller-friendly; the mahogany trail is not.
• Rain makes the forest better, not worse. We go anyway.

Questions people ask

Will we definitely see the monkeys?

Almost always — the roadside troop is habituated and stays near the park entrance. We have never had a group leave without seeing them, but they are wild and we cannot promise.

Can you do the forest without the farm?

Yes, as a half day at $35 per person. Say so when you request and we will send that price instead.
